Resolved Question: How do you feel about Vancouver as the newest MLS franchise?
Vancouver was just rewarded the 17th MLS franchise. I think this is a great decision after seeing the success of Toronto FC (and Seattle’s season ticket sales). MLS will reward the 18th franchise in the near future (it looks like Portland is the favorite due to receiving city council approval). We could be seeing a Northwest trio of franchises.

The Vancouver stadium situation looks undefined. It appears the club will play at BC Place Stadium (which will be the venue for the opening/closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics) for the first 5 seasons after a $350 million renovation that will build a retractable roof. Just like Seattle, only the lower tier will be used for soccer matches. Then the plan is to build a new waterfront soccer stadium. But if you’re spending $350 million to renovate, why would you build a new stadium?

Then I heard MLS is interested in rewarding a 19th and 20th franchise…. Earliest reward date is 2012. Is MLS expanding too fast?
I don’t think a sole Canadian league is possible today or in the near future. MLS is working better due to scale. The league can market itself to advertisers, television and city government (for new stadiums) as a whole entity (”We can reach 18 of the largest markets in the U.S. and Canada”) versus a smaller league that says they are only in a few cities.

As for relegation/promotion, that’s not going to happen anytime soon because of the business model. New franchises have to spend $40 million to enter MLS. How can an ownership group justify this expense if you could get relegated? The only way it can work is if MLS could negotiate two nice TV contracts: One for the 1st and 2nd division each.

It looks like Portland will be rewarded the 18th MLS franchise on Friday. Sorry Phoenix fan… But I’m sure you’ll host World Cup matches if the U.S. wins the 2018 or 2022 bid.
