Carmine is a young girl of about fifteen- and an only child of english aristocrats. She seems to have everything her heart desires- except she has nobody to share it with until she meets David, a young fisherman with seemingly no prospects but a very snappy temperament. The swans at the lake were whiter than snow that day.

She had told her mother four years ago that she liked the swans she had seen at a friend’s house, and she had immediately ordered fifty of the birds to go in their own river. Carmine found it very hard to believe that they hadn’t always lived there… they seemed to love the water of the dark river like she loved her own house- flapping their wings and gasping out sentences to each other in their strange, harsh language, Cari wondered if they could have been happier if they had stayed where they were. She wondered if the swans even knew they had been moved, whether or not they did- if they had families of their own, if they had been torn away from them. Quietly, she moved down to the waterfront, spotting her favourite bird- Gray. She could tell it was him from his feathers; he had always been a natural dark shade of grey. She wasn’t sure why she loved him any more than her other birds, perhaps it was just that he seemed to understand her when she talked to him. Reflecting over this last thought, Cari wondered quietly if she was crazy, talking to swans. Oh well. Nobody else seemed to listen. From the way that Gray looked at her, she was sure that they felt something- at least a flitter or a shadow of human emotion. Gray probably felt more than some humans she knew did.

She sat by the river for the rest of the day, throwing in small pebbles and watching them sink to the bottom. Looking down, she bit her lip. She wished she were prettier, smarter… something other than what she was; because she didn’t think she could take the loneliness any more. She missed company she had never had. Carmine picked up a large stone, and tossed it miserably into the lake, scattering water droplets everywhere.

“Hey! You want to scare all the fish away?” An angry voice came from the other side of the river- and Carmine jumped to her feet, startled. A boy of around seventeen was perched on the dock on the opposing side of the river, his line in the water. He had dark eyes, and thick brown hair- something about him reminded her of Grey. He seemed to know more than what came across.

“Sorry,” Carmine called out, fixing her dress around her knees as she moved a little closer, the river preventing her from getting too close. “What are you doing?” The boy still looked a little peeved at her- and Carmine shrunk away from his irritation. As the boy saw her discomfort, he relaxed, looking a little remorseful.

Resolved Question: How do I get an accurate home appraisal?
I’m trying to refinance my house. It is on a relatively large lake that also leads into 3 other large lakes, deck, pool, new roof, fireplace. My problem is that there have been no other houses that have sold on any of these lakefronts in the last few months. The appraiser said she had to go by near waterfront homes to do the comps. However, the homes she used were on large ponds, not a lake. Difference: You can boat, jet ski, waterski etc. on my lake. The waterfront she used for the comps only allows canoes. She also used a fixer upper foreclosure at that! Plus, none of the other homes she used had pools or a fireplace. How do I get an accurate appraisal without any generally similar comps?
