Group of mid-30s guys looking for a vacation rental in the Poconos area. Looking for these things: waterfront to do some fishing, sleeps 6-12, game room, bbq grill, place for a fire outside possibly, and walking distance to a bar would be great. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Resolved Question: Am I selfish for not wanting kids?
I am a woman in my late 20’s. I am single, no boyfriend, no kids. I have no desire to get married whatsoever. When I think about if I want kids, I say no because of the cost. Food, clothing, medical, toys, school, tuition, vacations. I have a very elegant lifestyle right now and I like it that way. I live in one of the most expensive parts of town, I rent a waterfront condo, I buy gourmet organic food, I like going to the salon and spa on a regular basis, I like going to my yoga and pilates classes, I like lounging and sipping bubbly, I like working out and keeping my body in top shape. And I like my money. I never want to be dependant on a man. The only way I would want to have a single kid is if I, as a single person, made at least $100,000/year. Because I refuse to leave my waterfront condo to move to the suburbs, I refuse to trade in my sports car for a minivan, etc. And this does not mean that if I were married that I would want to have kids if we had a joint household income of $100,000/year with my spouse - it just would not be enough. I believe that not giving my children the very best of everything and a posh lifestyle would not be fair to the child. So I have my pets and I treat them like my babies. And I also know that they will not one day move out of the house, hate me and never want to speak to me again or only come over on national holidays. Does this make me selfish?
Steve R: I respect your opinion and your decisions in life. But after you get divorced, pay through your teeth in legal fees, your kids and you will be left with nothing but bitterness. And even if you stay together, your kids will one day be grown and will leave the nest. Maybe they will move across the country, call you on Sundays, visit on holidays. And you will maybe have grandkids that you will have to spend money on. So, really, you will grow old alone and sad too perhaps. But you will do so with a much lesser fortune. As for the laughs and smiles and memories, that is what good friends are for. I have lots of laughs and smiles and memories with my girlfriends. And pets can provide all the laughs, smiles and memories you could ask for. And they will not get married, go away to college and forget all about you. They will constantly need you. Further to laughs, smiles and memories… one can always become a teacher and get all of that and more.
Sydney: I totally agree. Yes, some people have no clue about what it takes to bring a child into this world. They think the most important part is to make the baby and bring it into the world. The rest is a piece of cake. Because, of course, kids raise themselves and can survive on nothing but air and water. I see so many of my friends rushing into marriage and parenthood. And then they get divorced, lose their money, their ability to continue in their career. Their quality of life is pretty much non-existent, which means the same for their child. It is simply my parents pressuring me into getting married and having kids - a lot of pressure! My mother says I am selfish for not wanting/having a husband and children. Maybe one day I will, but not right now. And that’s okay.
